Was excited to see this opening day with my 3 and 6 year old cousins. I was disappointed. I can’t say it was terrible, but I can’t say it was great. You just can’t turn a small book, with only a few words per page, into a 90 minute movie. It relied heavily on visuals, which were amazing but just weren’t enough to carry a movie for long spans of time. It’s direction was very Sophia Coppola-esq but couldn’t capture the right emotions from the “wild things” to develop the full emotional setting. The wild things were outrageously hard to read. Luckily, the kid in the film was adorable and showed a great range for his age.
I could describe this film’s storyboard in a couple of sentences: “1) Max is bad. Max runs away. Max meets wild things. 2) Wild things run through visually appealing scenery. Cue annoying, repetitive and melancholy Karen O music. Wild things play fight. Wild things reference relationships. 3) Repeat #2 a couple more times, stretching each scene as far as it can go. 4) End”
My three year old cousin talked and walked about the theatre for more than half of the movie. He categorizes people into stores. I.E. He says he got me from the computer store. I told him that I got this movie from the sleepy store.
